Fans Pile In To Cheer On Jackrabbits

Fans Pile In To Cheer On Jackrabbits

The South Dakota State University men set attendance records in their first appearance of the Summit League tournament, and plenty of fans were on hand again Monday night as the team defeated Southern Utah.

"Now that Oral Roberts lost we're even more excited!" SDSU student Logan Lower said.

With almost no seat left empty, the fans came out, filling Sioux Falls Arena seats overwhelmingly in blue and yellow.

"I think the three pointer is what we really have going for us," SDSU student Levi Silva said.

South Dakota State isn't technically the host of the tournament, but the house belonged to the team. The men have never made it to the NCAA tournament. Monday's win guarantees at least a spot in the Summit League title game.

"Got a good feeling about it. It's a good atmosphere," Tracy Hofer, who drove from Mitchell, said. "There's a lot of SDSU fans."

"We definitely outnumber everybody. And I love the atmosphere. We came to see them win because we want to win," Lower said.

But win or lose, it's easier to climb to the top when the hardwood is on your own flat piece of the Plains.

The SDSU men will play Western Illinois University at 8 p.m. Tuesday.  Before that, the SDSU women will face-off against UMKC.  That game is set to start at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

You can follow along with the action on the Summit League Tournament page.  KELO's Jim Madalinsky will live blog the action from courtside for both games.  And we'll bring you the comments from SDSU coaches and players live following each game.
