Creating positive memories, that is what the Family Visitation Center is all about. The center helps reconnect families together in a safe way. Located just outside of downtown Sioux Falls, it’s a simple building, but means the world to some families in KELOLAND.
"I think it's a great thing. It keeps the kids safe and the staff too, I think that is their number one concern," Terri Hermanson said.
Hermanson is a grandmother to a few grandkids that come to the center. She has been bringing her grandkids there for more than a year now.
"These children have come from homes that are abusive due to alcohol or drug use, maybe they have been neglected, or a divorce where the parents don't get along," said Hermanson.
She says, families that come here can know they are entering a safe environment, regardless of what is happening in the outside world.
"It's also good for families and parents that have drug or alcohol problems they are screened before they get here so if they are under the influence there is no contact with the children," Hermanson said.
The mission of the Family Visitation Center is mending relationships and reconnecting families peacefully. The center and its staff are around the entire way.
"If you were to drop your kids off with that parent that was having issues, you don't know what's happening to them, whereas here the staff is on top of it, they watch what's going on and make sure that the kids are safe and that's what everything should be about is the kids," Hermanson said.
KELOLAND-TV is hosting a fundraiser drive for the Family Visitation Center on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are a number of items the center needs, from diapers to rocking chairs, fleece for blankets, gas cards and more. Click here for a full list of items needed.
