Family Limited In Donations To Judicial Candidate

Family Limited In Donations To Judicial Candidate
PIERRE, SD -

A South Dakota committee that deals with judicial elections says limits on campaign donations apply to members of a judicial candidate's family.

Campaign rules say a person or organization can donate no more than $1,000 in an election year to a judicial candidate. A candidate had asked whether that limit applied to members of a judicial candidate's family.

The South Dakota Special Committee on Judicial Campaign Intervention says there's no exception for family members, so they can donate only $1,000.

But the committee says candidates can donate more than $1,000 to their own campaigns.

The committee did not say who had requested the advisory option.

The committee is appointed by the South Dakota Supreme Court to issue advisory opinions and respond to complaints regarding judicial campaign activities.
