Family Helping Man Seeking Parole

July 13, 2014, 5:30 PM by Leland Steva

Family Helping Man Seeking Parole
YANKTON, SD -

A man who has been in prison for more than two decades on a manslaughter conviction is getting help from his family as he hopes to be granted parole.

In 1994 Joaquin Ramos pled guilty to a first degree manslaughter charge after shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend.

He was originally sentenced to life in prison without parole. Governor Mike Rounds in 2010 commuted his sentence to 150 years, making Ramos eligible for parole. After talking with the victim’s family, Rounds recommended that Ramos parole should be denied. Ramos was denied his parole request last year. This year, Ramos has the help of his family who says even though he made a huge mistake, he deserves a second chance.

“He was highly remorseful, he regretted what he did, and he is trying to make amends,” Ramos’ uncle Angelo Cruz said.

Ramos will have his second parole hearing on Tuesday.

The prisoner also met a special family member after 24 years of never speaking with him. We will show you who it was coming up tonight on KELOLAND Weekend News at 10.
