Tornadoes are probably the last thing on your mind now. But over the past decade, KELOLAND has seen numerous September twisters.
In a video from 2006, near the town of Colton, the damage to barns was extensive. An F-2 tornado crossed paths with farm buildings near Canistota and caused plenty of damage. In total, there were 13 tornado reports that day.
Tornadoes were also reported nine years ago to the day near Browns Valley in northeastern South Dakota. There was also a brief funnel that touched down near Rock Valley, Iowa on September 30, 2007.
Storms typically drop off by October as we continue to lose warming sunlight.
Last year, storm reports dropped nearly five-fold from September to October. But with quickly-changing weather, we shouldn't turn our backs on the chance of severe weather.
