Expert Expects Below Average Wildfire Season In SD
RAPID CITY, SD -

A fire meteorologist in South Dakota says the snowfall of the past few months has created conditions that are expected to help keep the number of wildfires this year below average.

State fire meteorologist Darren Clabo says the snow has built up soil moisture and dampened ground fuels preventing the woods to dry up.

Clabo says he expects the 2014 wildfire season to be similar to the one last year.

He says the highest fire potentials are in south-central South Dakota between Shannon and Charles Mix counties, where some dry conditions still persist despite the snowfall of this past winter.
