As hunters get ready to hit the fields, many of them aren't in shape.
Every year there are reports of hunters suffering heart attacks or straining muscles. That's why a Sioux Falls personal trainer has created an exercise program specifically for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.
24-year-old Devin Clay aims to stay one step ahead of the game when it comes to hunting. He's getting in shape now to prepare for deer hunting season.
"Friends who I go hunting with do a lot of walking. We do a lot of the hiking, sitting, all that kind of stuff," Clay said.
Clay is taking part in an exercise program created by personal trainer Jordan Miller. It's called Run 2 Gun.
"If you're overweight and you're carrying a lot of extra weight, it puts a lot of pressure on your heart and body. We want to make sure even by shedding 20 pounds before hunting season can really make a big health difference," Miller said.
What makes this program different from many other exercise programs is it’s customized for your needs as a hunter.
Miller has three programs. Two of them are 12 weeks long, so that would be more ideal for deer hunters. If you still want to get in shape for pheasant hunting, the third program could be for you.
"We also do customized plans where if you're three weeks out from season and you are panicking a little bit, we will get it done for you. We will help you get in better shape in those three weeks or two weeks--whatever you have," Miller said.
If you aren't able to train with Miller in person, you can do that online through his website and Facebook page.
"We want to build a positive memory. We want to look back on that hunt and we don't want to think, 'I got back, and I was so sore and beat up," Miller said.
Clay believes he'll not only have a fun and exciting hunting season but he also feels better overall.
