Ex-Air Force Sgt., Outed As Lesbian, To Re-Enlist
September 21, 2011, 2:41 PM
HARRISBURG, PA -
A female sergeant who was discharged last year from the Air Force last year after South Dakota police reported her marriage to another woman is planning to re-enlist now that the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in uniform has been repealed.
Jene Newsome says that she spoke with a recruiter and that she'd be happy having her old job back. Newsome was working at the Ellsworth Air Force Base when police serving an out-of-state warrant against her partner noticed an Iowa marriage certificate and notified the base.
The Air Force later gave Newsome an honorable discharge, but Newsome has said she feels like her privacy was violated. The ACLU filed a complaint against the department.
