Events Center Absentee Voting Begins Tuesday

September 23, 2011, 10:05 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Events Center Absentee Voting Begins Tuesday
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Sioux Falls voters will make a $115 million decision in November. That will decide the fate of a proposed events center in the city. But voters don't have to wait until then.

Business is picking up at the Minnehaha County Auditor's Office. Despite the November events center special election being more than a month away, some voters will cast their choice here beginning next Tuesday when absentee voting opens.

"Absentee voting will run up until 3:00 the day of the election. You can come on down and cast your ballot," Minnehaha County Auditor Bob Litz said.

The ballot for the special election is pretty simple; don't expect any complicated language on this one.

"'Yes' vote means you want the events center and a 'no' vote means no you don't want it built. It's very straightforward, even a Norwegian can understand it. So, away we go," Litz said.

Litz is reminding voters to be prepared to vote, whenever they choose to mark their ballot. That means bringing your drivers license, another valid ID, or filling out an affidavit. You may also need your patience because he thinks turnout could be high.

"The last couple of elections we had 35 and 37 percent turnout respectively. But I think with this one and the controversy that surrounds it, I'm hoping we'll get 50 percent out," Litz said.

And once those votes are tallied, we'll know the fate of a possible events center.
