Elderly Couple Near Akron, IA Found Dead

The Iowa DCI Crime Lab and Plymouth County Sheriff's deputies are still gathering information about what is now considered a homicide or violent attack that led to the death of an elderly couple near Akron. Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo says those at the scene are working non-stop to find the answers they need.

"There's just a ton of stuff for us to go through, for them to go through, to sort through and to make sure that we haven't missed anything. With two deaths, it complicates things just a little bit," Van Otterloo said.

Sheriff Van Otterloo believes one person could help the investigation, but he's nowhere to be found. They are looking for Jonathan Neunaber, who was last seen driving a 2006 beige Buick four-door vehicle with the Iowa license plate ACG 866.

"Johnathan does reside, that is his residence, the scene of this death," Van Otterloo said.

An autopsy to determine an official cause of death will likely take place in Ankeny on Friday.

Neighbors say the couple would take trips into Akron on a regular basis, usually for a cup of coffee. The news reached the town quickly and people are still trying to comprehend the news.

"Really shocked. I know them both, I've known them all my life and until I know the circumstances of what happened, it's hard to believe that something like that would happen out there," Alan Huygens said.

As the reality of the loss sets in, Huygens and others wait for answers.

"Hadn't seen them in a few years, but it's just a real surprise. I'm anxious what more they find out," Huygens said.

At this point early in the investigation, Sheriff Van Otterloo says finding Neunaber is his top priority.

"We do believe that he has information that might sort out some of the questions that we have in regards to the matter and cause of death," Van Otterloo said.

Sheriff Van Otterloo says that if you see Johnathan Neunaber or the vehicle he is believed to be driving, contact the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office at (712) 546-8191.
