El Nino Slowly Taking Shape

August 30, 2012, 5:08 AM by Scot Mundt

El Nino Slowly Taking Shape

While many eyes are on Isaac as he continues to spin in the gulf coast states, there's a bigger weather phenomena taking shape in the Pacific Ocean.

Forecast models are predicting the Pacific waters to warm as we go into September and the extra warming is expected to put us into an El Nino pattern this fall.

El Nino should help the dry conditions we've had in KELOLAND over the past several months as more storms will ride the jet stream into the Pacific Northwest, usually giving KELOLAND better chances for rain as storms ride the jet into the upper plains.  Of course, the amount of moisture available when these storms arrive has an influence on how much precipitation KELOLAND receives.

The last time the El Nino factors lined up to values we currently have was in 2006.  That fall gave Sioux Falls above average rain in September, but we fell below in October and November.  Temperatures were below average in September and October, but returned above average in November.

We'll have to wait and see what this fall brings.
