EF4 Tornado Leaves Behind Damage In NW Iowa

June 29, 2010, 6:12 PM by Brian Karstens

EF4 Tornado Leaves Behind Damage In NW Iowa
The National Weather Service just finished surveying the damage tornadoes left behind in the Little Rock-Sibley, Iowa, area.

Words can hardly describe what kind of damage a tornado leaves behind especially when it's severe enough for an EF4 rating.

The home belonging to the John Schuck Family was damaged by EF2 winds of 111 to 135 miles per hour, taking the roof off the home and destroying the shelter belt.

When the tornado crossed the road, it widened to 1/4 mile and destroyed the neighbor's house, lifting it off its foundation with winds at this point up to nearly 150 miles per hour. Debris was blown into the basement when the house was moved, exposing those in the basement to the furry of the tornado.

Cars are never a safe place during a tornado, and some people learned that the hard way. The back axle was snapped with both rear wheels on the left side of the vehicle. The motor was sucked out and blown into a neighboring field. The tornado had winds up to 200 miles per hour at this point.

Farther down the road, three cars took shelter from the tornado under the overpass on Highway 60 and all three ended up being severely damaged.

Even a Harvestore silo was toppled and it had been anchored in concrete.

As intense as this damage is, residents in the towns of both Little Rock and Sibley know how differently this tornado would have been had it tracked just one or two miles farther north, putting hundreds of homes in the path of these devastating winds.
