Education Merit Pay Bill Up For Debate

Education Merit Pay Bill Up For Debate
PIERRE, SD - A new group of South Dakota lawmakers are scheduled to take look at the proposed education merit pay bill which would give bonuses to the top teachers in the state.

The Senate Education Committee is expected to take up House Bill 1234 at 7:45 Thursday morning.

It looks at giving $5,000 bonuses to the top 20 percent of teachers. Schools can also completely opt out of it or create their own plan. It would also give new science and math teachers an $8,000 bonus for their first five years. It could also possibly get rid of continuing contracts, also known as tenure.

It's already passed through the House side of the South Dakota Legislature. Now, senators could completely revamp the bill, sending it back to the House to approve those changes. Or keep it as is and push it through to the Senate floor. If passed there, it would continue to Governor Dennis Daugaard's desk.

KELOLAND News will have more on the developments in the hearing later today on KELOLAND News. You can listen to the live discussion over HB 1234 through the South Dakota Legislative Research Council's website when it begins at 7:45.
