Education Committee To Discuss Teacher Bonus Plan

February 8, 2012, 6:03 AM

Education Committee To Discuss Teacher Bonus Plan
PIERRE, SD - The House Education Committee is expected to hear testimony Wednesday morning on amendments to South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard's plan to give some South Dakota teachers bonuses.

Daugaard's proposal in HB 1234 included giving state school districts' top 20 percent of teachers a $5,000 bonus.

But amendments now on the table would include an opt-out for districts that don't want to participate in the bonus plan and allow district administrators to come up with their own bonus plan. But that would have to be based on student achievement and be approved by the Secretary of Education.

The proposed changes would also replace the governor's proposal to give middle and high school math and science teachers a $3,500 bonus with a plan to give $8,000 incentives to new math and science teachers in the state.

The governor's proposal to get rid of continuing contracts, or tenure, is still included in HB 1234.

KELOLAND News will be at the hearing and bring you the details of Wednesday's testimony on KELOLAND.com and later today on KELOLAND News. You can also listen to the hearing live from Pierre on the State's Legislative Research Council's website. It's scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m.
