Economy, Enrollment Factors In CTU Closure

November 29, 2012, 4:57 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Economy, Enrollment Factors In CTU Closure
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Long-term changes are coming to the Colorado Technical University campus in Sioux Falls.  School officials say the campus is no longer taking new students.

It's class and business as usual Thursday at the Colorado Technical University campus in Sioux Falls.  But the students currently enrolled will be some of the last for CTU Sioux Falls.

"We're committed to quality education for our students.  In periods of declining enrollment, it is becoming more difficult to provide the quality of education that we're used to," CTU Sioux Falls President David Heflin said.

CTU's board of trustees has opted to stop taking in new students at the Sioux Falls campus, citing the economy as one of the reasons.  For those who are currently enrolled, Heflin says the school will continue classes while the students work toward their degrees.

"It's a tough message.  But it's a message that they need to move on toward completing their degrees.  We're committed to take care of every student that's currently enrolled and we'll do that," Heflin said.

While those with the CTU campus in Sioux Falls say it will not have a major impact on current students, it will have a change-of-life affect on the more than 100 current employees.  But for now, CTU officials say they're focusing on the needs of current students.  Graduations will continue as scheduled.  In fact, Heflin spent much of the day meeting with students and planning their next steps during this time that they're calling a "teach out."

"We plan on communicating one-on-one with our students and our faculty and staff and make certain we have a plan for each student to be successful moving forward," Heflin says.

Heflin says student success will remain his top goal until the scheduled final class date of September 30, 2016.

CTU services for students will be available after the 2016 date through online services and phone calls to the office in Colorado.  The Sioux Falls campus is not the only CTU location going through the "teach-out" phase.
