HURON, SD -
A wood and steel bridge on a county road near Lake Byron in eastern South Dakota has collapsed.
Beadle County Emergency Manger Tom Moeding said Friday that officials don't know why the bridge over Foster Creek in the northwest corner of Lake Byron collapsed. The lake is about 15 miles northeast of Huron.
Moeding told KOKK-AM someone reported Friday morning the bridge was sagging. An official went out to the bridge and stopped traffic that was trying to cross it. Moeding says a short time after traffic was rerouted, the bridge split in the middle and fell in the creek.
Moeding says an engineer will evaluate the bridge to determine why it fell. The bridge could be out for a year or more before repairs can be made.
