Drought Monitor

July 24, 2014, 6:21 PM by Scot Mundt

Drought Monitor

Rain was spotty in KELOLAND on Thursday, but for those areas that received the rain it was well needed. July rain amounts through Wednesday are well below average for much of KELOLAND.

In fact, by as much as two inches for areas such as Aberdeen, Watertown, Winner, Mitchell, and Sioux Falls as seen on this map. There are a couple of locations above average, such as Rapid City, Pine Ridge, and Huron. These locations are above average by two-thirds of an inch in Rapid City to an inch and a third in Huron.

While many locations are below average, areas of southeast South Dakota are the only ones included in the latest the drought monitor. Conditions are now moderate from near Huron south to Mitchell. Surrounding areas are labeled as dry.

Rain chances will continue to be sparse over the next several days. The good news is temperatures will cool, which in turn will slow down the rate of evaporation.
