Drought Cutting Into SD Corn, Soybean Crops

Drought appears to be affecting South Dakota's corn and soybean crops.

The Agriculture Department's September production report lowers the expected yield for the state's corn crop by 2 bushels per acre from August and the expected yield for the soybean crop by 3 bushels.

The South Dakota corn crop is now pegged at just under 509 million bushels, down 2 percent from August and down 22 percent from last year. The soybean crop is forecast to be just under 125 million bushels, down 10 percent over the month and down 17 percent over the year.

South Dakota sorghum production is forecast at about 4 ½ million bushels, down 6 percent from last month and down 29 percent from 2011.
