Drivers Waiting Out Storm Pack Truck Stops

December 9, 2012, 9:54 PM by Jenna Petrak

Drivers Waiting Out Storm Pack Truck Stops
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

With the interstate closures from Chamberlain to Sioux Falls to Sisseton on Sunday, drivers packed truck stops along eastern south Dakota, waiting out the blizzard.

Seamus McCarron and Patrick Harkin didn't expect to see near white out conditions on their trip to South Dakota.

The Ireland natives, who were pheasant hunting on the west side of the state, spent the day traveling in the blizzard.

"When we drove it was white out all the way," Harkin said.

"It was terrible. When we got on the 90, from the beginning it was terrible," McCarron said.

It took them six steering wheel gripped hours to make the 230 mile trip. It was especially tense since they don't normally see this kind of weather, only seeing snow every now and then in Ireland.

"It only stays maybe one or two days. That's about the height of it and that only happens maybe once or twice over the wintertime, not like what you get here," McCarron said.

And the driving conditions weren't like anything they'd see before.

"Parts of it you just could not see in front of you. You had to be really careful, but we took it easy and had plenty of time," McCarron said.

Now that they've make it to Sioux Falls, all they need to go is re-charge, get to the airport and wait for their plane.

While they re-charged here at a Sioux Falls truck stop, they weren't sure if their plane would be delayed, but if it was they had a backup plan.

Harkin: What do you think we'll do Seamus?
McCarron: Well, we'll try to get on the plane and if we don't we'll be in the bar.
