Driver Distracted By Phone During Fatal MN Crash

July 1, 2014, 4:48 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Driver Distracted By Phone During Fatal MN Crash
STEEN, MN -

The Minnesota State Patrol says 25-year-old Christopher Weber was distracted by his cell phone when he hit and killed a 33-year-old Minnesota mother with his pick-up truck Monday.

Authorities say Weber was driving east on Minnesota Highway 270 near Steen just before 11:30 a.m. Monday when he hit Andrea Boeve. Boeve was riding her bike on the side of the road and pulling her two daughters in a bike trailer. Boeve died from the crash – her four-year-old and one-year-old daughters had non-life threatening injuries.

Man In Custody After Fatal MN Crash

Lieutenant Matt Sorenson with the Minnesota State Patrol says Boeve and her children were all wearing helmets and the one-year-old was in a safety seat inside the bike trailer. The four-year-old is still hospitalized but the one-year-old girl has been released.

Rock County Attorney Jeff Haubrich has charged Weber with vehicular homicide and vehicular injury. Authorities says Weber was driving with ‘gross negligence’ while being distracted by his phone.

Weber is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
