A man faces a number of charges following a crash involving a Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office patrol car.
Authorities say two deputies were going south on Six Mile Road near Rice Street just after 2 a.m. Sunday when their car was hit by a northbound Mercury Sable that swerved into the wrong lane. Deputy in field training Derek Gulbrandson tried to get out of the way, but was unable to avoid the crash. The patrol car was hit on the driver’s side, forcing it off the road and into the west ditch. The other car went into the ditch and through a fence before coming to a stop in a pasture.
The driver of the Mercury Sable, Trevor Buckholtz, is charged with DUI drugs, reckless driving and possessing drug paraphernalia among other charges. He and his passenger were taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Gulbrandson received minor injuries to his left knee. Field Training Officer Deputy Phillip Leidholt was not hurt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
