Drive Thru Difference Day

December 6, 2013, 4:55 PM by Perry Groten

Drive Thru Difference Day
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

If your dinner plans Friday night include a run through a drive-through, bring along some generosity to-go.  It's Drive Thru Difference Day, when customers are encouraged to pay for someone else's meal. But one fast food restaurant chain isn't waiting for its customers to take the initiative.

All 11 Burger Kings in Sioux Falls have been randomly picking up the tab for customers throughout the day. Those customers then receive a coupon urging them to respond in-kind.

Whether they drive up, or walk up, customers are getting a pleasant surprise.

"It's just a good start to my day. It saves me a little money and I can put that toward something else I need to take care of," customer Josh Hamann said.

Josh Hamann is enjoying his French toast and sausage breakfast.

"Free food always tastes better,"  Hamann said.

Customers surprised by the free meals plan to pay it forward.

"Maybe next time I come through I'll pay for the guy behind me so that way somebody else gets to benefit from it too," customer Todd Elsing said.

The breakfast crowd sets the tone for the rest of the day.

"I tell you what, when you get something for free to start your day with, what's it feel like? It's a lightening experience for you and then you go to work and say man, I was at that Burger King and that crazy guy over there, he gave us a free meal today and said Make A Difference Day. So their co-workers might come through and do that for somebody else," Burger King manager Phil Bossler said.

Customers who receive these coupons say returning the favor by doing good unto others is especially needed at this time of year.

"Just little things help out a person this time of year. Paying for another person's meal, paying for another person's ticket at the grocery store, or part of, just a few dollars that could pay for their Christmas," Hamann said.

A charitable chain reaction at the drive through, fueled by the holiday spirit.
