Downtown Events Center Discussions Over Coffee

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The buzz inside Sioux Falls coffee shops today wasn't so much related to caffeine, but rather an events center. This week's release of a study showing a spot next to Cherapa Place as the best location for a downtown events center has generated plenty of coffee talk in that neighborhood. We sampled some of the opinions at Kaladi's Bistro on Phillips Avenue.
A hot cup of coffee hits the spot on a cold winter's day. But now you can add a little more steam to the conversation by bringing up the topic of an events center in downtown Sioux Falls.
"Do you think it will bring in a lot of people from surrounding areas?" asked Deb Stockwell of Hartford.
"Maybe," Tara Valdez of Sioux Falls said.
"Maybe if they build it downtown, it would make Sioux Falls' downtown that much nicer looking," James Coleman of Sioux Falls said.
"I guess I'm open to that idea as long as there's enough parking for everyone," Lisa Fowler of Sioux Falls said.
"I think it would be really crowded, with the parking and getting out of work," Valdez said.
"A traffic control guy would probably give you a better answer whether it would jam up the streets or not, I don't know," Coleman said.
"It's quite crowded down here anyway, so I just don't see a space for it, but they come up with something good, you never know, you never know," Stockwell said.
The consensus among the customers at Kaladi's is that the debate over an events center is going to be brewing for a long time.
"I guess we will have to wait and see. Look at kind of who and what they come up with. We may have a vote and we go from there," Stockwell said.
"You'd think it would be ended by now. But it isn't. It just keeps going and going," Coleman said.
Another Kaladi's customer told us it's a good thing the decision making process is taking a long time since the final result about whether to build downtown or at the arena, will affect the community for decades to come.
