Downtown Block Party Kicks Off

Downtown Block Party Kicks Off

If the weather cooperates, the downtown area will see a large number of people at the block party on the Eastbank.

The block party is one part of First Friday, an event planned by Downtown Sioux Falls. Many stores are expected to stay open later and there will be many fun activities to choose from. Food and beverage venders will be on site, as well as live music.

“It's an American Craftsman gallery and offers all different kinds of art made by American artists, including pottery, glass, jewelry and metal art. She says she's grateful for the block party because it can generate a lot of business to the store and a great opportunity to meet new people,” Sticks and Steel gallery manager Diana Linnemeyer said.

"A night like the block party, you get husbands and wives and just groups of people out together having fun; that have never been in here before. We are seeing more and more of husbands and wives going out for dinner and then coming in and just shopping together," Linnemeyer said.

The goal behind this Block Party event is to get more foot traffic to the downtown area as a whole, not just Phillips Avenue.

"One of the things about the block party, one of the reasons why it was developed was to gain awareness of the Eastbank downtown," Downtown Event Coordinator Maureen Ohm said. "All of downtown has something to offer and Phillips Avenue is awesome. Most people think of Phillips Avenue when they think of downtown and we wanted to expand awareness that downtown is bigger than Phillips Avenue."

Maureen Ohm is the event coordinator and says the block party is appropriate for all ages.

"It is just one of those great summer scenes," Ohm said. "You want to hang out outside and just listen to music and be casual and who doesn't want to eat some BBQ and drink a beer or a pop ... Whatever your scene is."

It's an event that focuses a lot on providing a fun gathering for all of those who attend.

"Community is so important, because community is caring. Community is knowing what people's needs are what their wants are and appreciating that they come and do business with you," Linnemeyer said.
