The Fort Pierre Lions Club donated a Zing Laser to Pheasantland Industries at the South Dakota State Penitentiary to help produce more Braille services for the state.
The laser will help create Braille Textbooks that will be used in classrooms and the State Library in Pierre. The textbooks used to be made by hand by the inmates at the penitentiary, but now the year-long process will now be cut in half. Pages on the textbook will be raised to allow blind children to feel the pictures, and that is something that technology is not able to duplicate.
“They haven't yet come out with a cost effective way of feeling a tablet or a screen on a computer so this is an absolute necessary item for some children,” Lions Club Board Member Karen Rickert said.
Lions Clubs across the state pitched in for the laser and over $12,000 was raised.
Inmates will be using the laser as part of the Pheasantland Industries program.
