Documents Detail Deadly Pierre Shooting

Documents Detail Deadly Pierre Shooting
Dalton Williams

PIERRE, SD -

Braiden McCahren, 16, of Pierre has been charged with first-degree murder after court documents say he shot and killed 16-year-old Dalton Williams of Pierre on Tuesday night.

Documents filed on Wednesday say McCahren and another juvenile had just picked up Williams from his house after school and all three of them went to McCahren’s house to get something to eat.

The third juvenile told investigators that he got into an argument with McCahren over a paintball incident. The juvenile says he began to ‘wrestle jokingly’ with McCahren before McCahren went into his house at 400 N. Buchanan Avenue in Pierre.

When inside, the juvenile reported that McCahren pointed a shotgun at him and he heard the gun click. McCahren got a shotgun shell and he heard the gun click once again. The juvenile says he then tried to leave the house, but McCahren once again pointed the shotgun toward him and Williams.  That’s when the gun fired and killed Williams. The third juvenile boy left the house just after the shooting around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police say Williams is a sophomore at Riggs High School in Pierre.

McCahren is in custody and did consent to have his blood drawn for alcohol testing.  If convicted, he faces life in prison.

There's already a Rest In Peace Dalton Williams Facebook tribute page.  And a memorial fund has been set up for his family; you can make a donation at any of the First National Bank branches in Pierre and Fort Pierre.
