Details On Janklow Services At The Capitol

January 16, 2012, 9:44 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Details On Janklow Services At The Capitol
PIERRE, SD - The public will be welcomed inside the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre Tuesday to honor former Governor Bill Janklow.

There will be two different events, a public viewing in the morning and a memorial service in the afternoon.

If you want to travel to Pierre to pay your respects to the former governor, there are a few things you need to know.

Doors to the capitol won't open until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. The public is encouraged to use the north doors of the capitol and they can wait outside until the doors open.

When people are inside, the public will be asked to keep moving as they move past the casket so they can move as many people through as possible.

The doors for the public viewing will close at 10:30 a.m. and the capitol will be cleared at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. Crews will then have an hour-and-a-half to set up 450 chairs for the public memorial service. Doors for that will open at 12:30 p.m. and the service is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

If there isn't a chair to sit on in the main level of the capitol for the memorial, the public can stand on the third and fourth floor balconies of the rotunda to view the service.

But, if the public can't find any standing room, they can go to the fourth floor committee rooms where they can view the service on large TV's in the rooms.

When the memorial service is over at 1:45 p.m., Governor Janklow's casket will come down the front steps of the capitol, two F-16 jets will fly over, there will be a 21 gun salute and bagpipes will play outside. The casket will then travel to Sioux Falls for Janklow's funeral Wednesday.
