Details In Humane Society Raid In Hurley

Details In Humane Society Raid In Hurley
One hundred seventy-two hunting dogs are at the Turner County Fairgrounds Wednesday night after the Humane Society of the United States took them from what they called 'unsanitary conditions.' Second Chance Rescue from Sioux Falls started the investigation into a dog breeder near Hurley after someone bought a dog from the business online and said it looked sick.

The dogs are being held at the fairgrounds until the Turner County States Attorney can take a look at the evidence in the case, but no charges have been filed against anyone so far.

The Humane Society of the United States says the dogs lacked medical care, were kept in confinement and were bred and used for hunting.

If you click on the player you can see video that the Humane Society of the United States gave KELOLAND News. It's video of what officials from the organization are calling unsanitary conditions. Second Chance Rescue of Sioux Falls helped carry the dogs off the property.

KELOLAND News asks: What did you find when you got inside?

"Today? The animals were living in.... the big issue is the conditions they were living in that seems to be the big issue right now. Bad conditions, unsafe conditions, basically for the animals to be in," Second Chance Rescue Humane Officer Rosey Quinn said.

Officials say the dogs don't look in bad shape visibly on the outside but they are examining all of them as part of the investigation. The Humane Society of the United States says nationwide this is the fourth raid they've done this week, and they also claim its one of the worst.

"Found 172 dogs found in absolutely horrible conditions, deplorable, dilapidated buildings living in their own feces and urine, a lot of sharp objects around. On a scale of one to ten, ten being the worst conditions I've seen, this is definitely a nine," Scotlund Haisley of the Humane Society of the United States said.

KELOLAND News traveled to Hurley and stopped by the property that was allegedly raided by the Humane Society, a women named Brooke met us at the end of the driveway and told us to contact their attorney.

When KELOLAND News called their attorney he said he's not prepared to speak on the record, but plans to fight any charges if they're filed.

So why were the dogs removed from the property if no charges have been filed? Second Chance Rescue says they just wanted to get the dogs out of the conditions they were living in and get them fresh food, water and bedding while the state's attorney looks over the evidence.

The Turner County States Attorney did not return calls about this case.
