Democrat Heidepriem Builds Bi-Partisan Ticket

June 1, 2010, 5:47 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Democrat Heidepriem Builds Bi-Partisan Ticket
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The only Democrat running for governor in South Dakota has picked a Republican as his running mate. Scott Heidepriem has tapped Sioux Falls businessman Ben Arndt as his Lieutenant Governor.

"Where he's gone he's been successful," Heidepriem said.

Heidepriem hopes his bi-partisan pick for Lieutenant Governor leads to a successful campaign for South Dakota's top job.

"Our problems are serious and it takes a bi-partisan solution, that's what it takes," Heidepriem said.

Heidepriem made the announcement that 36-year-old Arndt will fill out his ticket on Tuesday. Arndt is a registered Republican and the Chief Operation Officer for Bell Incorporated in Sioux Falls. A Yale graduate, he's also worked for Proctor and Gamble and Microsoft, but the businessman doesn't see his party affiliation as a problem.

"We agreed on the platforms. It's not really about what box you fit in from a party affiliation stand point as much as it is about addressing the issues and taking that agenda forward," Arndt said.

Arndt also brings business experience to the ticket, something both men say will be an asset to fixing the state's budget problems.

"Fixing the budget problems that the state has, and creating jobs for South Dakota, I think those are the most important issues facing the state today. Those are some of the strengths I can bring and that's why I think Scott put me on the ticket," Arndt said.

"Together, side-by-side, we will work to grow careers throughout South Dakota, making it clear that South Dakota is open for business," Heidepriem said.

And Heidepriem hopes reaching across the aisle will help him reach the goal of becoming South Dakota's next Governor.

Arndt is the son-in-law of Heidepriem's campaign chairman, Mark Graham, who owns Bell Incorporated, the company that Arndt works for.
