Deadline To Vote On Huron Opt Out This Week
December 19, 2005, 9:14 AM
The Huron School District is losing enrollment, but that's not the reason educators want to opt out of the property tax freeze.
They want another 600-thousand dollars in annual revenue for two years because of a projected increase in student numbers. The superintendent says the extra money will allow the district to hire staff and prepare for more non-English-speaking students.
Town leaders expect Huron to be more diverse because of projects such as a turkey processing plant being built and a new operations center for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad.
The deadline for residents to force a public vote is Thursday.
