Deadline Here For Firefighter Applications

August 4, 2014, 5:00 PM by Matt Holsen

Deadline Here For Firefighter Applications
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

After a slow start, applications are pouring as Sioux Falls Fire Rescue looks to fill open positions. Midnight tonight is the deadline to apply to be a firefighter for this next round of hirings.

With the deadline quickly approaching, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is making a final push for qualified applicants. Division Chief Brad Goodroad says, so far, they've received feedback from about 360.

"That's a pretty typical number. Usually we end up in that 300 range. We've had up to 500, 700 in the past. In the 300s is a pretty average amount for us," Goodroad said.

With a new fire station coming to keep up with city growth, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is looking to fill two new classes.

"We're opening a station. It's being built right now so next year we'll probably have two different cadet classes of at least twelve in each class," Goodroad said.

The new station will be in the northwest part of town and the city is looking for people with different backgrounds to work in it. This year the EMT requirement was dropped to broaden the search.

"We're kind of looking at diversity. We're also looking at just the opportunities for people throughout the state or country where they are not able to get that. If they're not economically able to obtain that EMT or if they're just in a location where they are too remote and not able to be close enough to where they offer that. This provides opportunity for them as well," Goodroad said.

For more information on how to apply, visit the City of Sioux Falls website.
