SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Day three of the Eric Robert pre-sentencing hearing is expected to include statements from family members of Ron Johnson, the South Dakota corrections officer Robert killed in his failed escape attempt from the Penitentiary.
Robert has pleaded guilty to the April murder and now faces the death penalty. A judge will decide whether he'll spend life in prison or be put to death following this week's proceedings.
On Tuesday, prosecutors called seven witnesses to testify including the coroner who examined Johnson's body, a blood stain expert, Robert's 2005 kidnapping victim, and an ex-girlfriend who says Robert was physically violent to her.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is expected to wrap up his case Wednesday.
During opening statements on Monday, Robert's attorney said the inmate wants to address the court to explain why he deserves to be put to death.
