With 51 percent of the precincts reporting, Daugaard had more than 52 percent of the votes. Former Brookings Mayor Scott Munsterman was second with 20 percent, Senate Republican Leader Dave Knudson of Sioux Falls was third with 15 percent, followed by Sen. Gordon Howie of Rapid City with 10 percent and Buffalo Gap rancher Ken Knuppe at less than 3 percent.

The five Republicans were fighting for the right to move onto the November election to face Senate Democratic Leader Scott Heidepriem of Sioux Falls, who was unopposed for his party's nomination.
