Cyber Security: Lessons Learned

February 5, 2014, 7:27 AM by Brady Mallory

Cyber Security: Lessons Learned
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Target officials are telling lawmakers the retailer is "deeply sorry" for the massive data breach over the holiday shopping period. While the company tries to win back customer trust, millions of Americans are thinking about how to keep their bank information safe.

Target is just the tip of the iceberg, according to Security Expert Marc Tobias. Data breaches have been happening and will continue to happen because he says we are essentially easy targets for hackers.

The types of cards we use with the magnetic strips are easy for criminals to steal and copy.

And if you are using any type of credit card or debit card, your information is already out there, opening us all up for identity theft.

"It is a nightmare and you may not know about it, if your credit reports aren't monitored every minute of every day, then you don't know if bad guys are opening accounts with your social security or date of birth and charging a lot and you get the bill or you don't pay it.  All of a sudden, you have negative information on your credit report," Tobias said.

In tonight's Eye on KELOLAND, we'll tell you about laws that are trying to beef up credit card security and what you might be seeing in the future.
