For the second straight year, Augustana and Southwest Minnesota State traded bouts in a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual, but this year the Mustangs broke through and snapped the Vikings' 13-dual win streak over SMSU with a 15-14 win. Augustana suffers their first NSIC and Division II loss of the season, falling to 6-3 overall, 2-1 in the NSIC, while the Mustangs improve to 5-2, 2-1 in NSIC competition.
After a tight 157-pound bout, the Vikings held a 9-6 lead, but were docked a point from an unsportsmanlike penalty on head coach Jason Reitmeier. The Mustangs went on to win three of the next five bouts by decision and secure the one-point victory.
TJ North continued his brilliant sophomore season with a 7-1 win over Antonio Mikkel and gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead after the 125-pound bout. Morgan Engbrecht lost a narrow 6-4 decision at 133 pounds to eighth-ranked Justin Reinsma to even the match.
Jacob Anderson and Shawn Hatlestad both won decisions, giving the Vikings a 9-3 lead. Anderson shut his opponent out 3-0 at 141 pounds and Hatlestad erased an early deficit to win 5-3, giving Augustana a six-point lead.
At 157 pounds, Mitch Rechtzigel battled Codie Lane but Lane prevented several takedowns despite the Viking coaching staff and Augustana faithful believing Rechtzigel deserved the two points. Narrowly missing on a pair of takedown attempts late in the third period, Rechtzigel fell 4-3 which cut the Augustana lead to 9-6 before intermission.
After the unsportsmanlike penalty was assessed, the Vikings lead was now two at 8-6 entering the 165-pound bout. Kyle Begin won a 9-4 decision over Time Weber, handing Weber his first loss of the season and giving the Mustangs a 9-8 edge in the team score.
In another one-point bout, seventh-ranked Jacob Begin scored a late takedown on Drake Fanslau to escape with a 5-4 win at 174 pounds. Coming off a defeat on Sunday, Fanslau took charge early and dictated the tempo, but Begin broke through with his second takedown of the bout and held off Fanslau's late shots in the final 30 seconds.
Ranked No. 8 at 184 pounds, Sean Derry nearly tied the dual with a major decision, but was held to a 10-3 decision win over Andrew Rodas. Derry logged 50 seconds of riding time just missing the extra point and drew the Vikings within one point, down 12-11 after eight bouts.
Jayd Docken gave the Vikings a lead with a 10-5 decision win at 197 pounds over SMSU's Micah Larson. Docken's win gave the Vikings a 14-12 edge entering the final bout, setting up another thrilling finish after the Vikings took last year's dual by one point.
After a scoreless first period, SMSU's Cole Wilson opened the scoring in the 285-pound bout with a three-point near fall early in the second. Augustana's Michael Lowman couldn't score in the remainder of the period and fought back with a takedown of his own in the third, but Wilson would score twice more and escaped to win the final bout 8-2.
The Vikings look to regroup and head to Kenosha, Wis. for the Ranger Duals where they will face two top-20 opponents in Indianapolis and McKendree as well as perennial power Findlay on Saturday, Jan. 18.
