CVB: Vikings Upset Wayne St. On Road
WAYNE, NE -

Augustana used 73 digs to limit No. 8 State to a season-low attack percentage and sweep the Wildcats on Tuesday night (25-21, 25-10, 25-21).  The Vikings improve to 9-2, 1-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and WSC suffers their second loss of the year, falling to 9-2, 1-2 in the NSIC.

This is Augustana's second win over a top-10 opponent in as many years -- the Vikings took down No. 3 Minnesota Duluth in five sets last season. This is also the second occasion the Vikings have defeated the Wildcats at Rice Auditorium while they were ranked in the top 10 -- the Vikings win 3-2 on Sept. 27, 2011 in Wayne, Neb and WSC was ranked No. 10.

Holly Hafemeyer tallied a match-high 19 kills and tied a season-low with just one error.  Courtney Ysker continued her hot streak on offense and defense, notching her sixth consecutive double-double with 10 kills and a match-high 22 digs.  Three other Vikings also tallied double-digit digs.

The Vikings faced their first deficit, down 16-14, late in the set, but Kayla Wallerich led the Vikings on a six-point surge to take the first set 25-21.  Holly Hafemeyer tallied eight kills in the first set while The Vikings picked up 21 digs and a pair of blocks limiting the Wildcats to a .200 attack percentage.

Augustana drilled 15 kills with no errors to dismantle Wayne State in the second set, winning 25-10 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.  Augustana roared out to an 8-1 lead with a 7-0 run and then closed the match on another 7-0 run led by three Hafemeyer kills and four WSC errors. Wayne State was held to just eight kills with nine errors in the second set for a -.024 attack percentage.

Facing a third-set deficit, down 11-8, Augustana reeled off an 11-3 run on the way to a 25-21 match-clinching win.  The Viking defense limited the Wayne State attack to just a .151 attack percentage in the third set to seal the win.

Marissa Johnson showed why she leads the NCAA Division II in assists as she dealt 42 in her three sets of action.  Taylor Hrdlichka nearly hit a flawless nine kills, but she picked up one error in the third set as the Vikings finished with a .331 attack percentage.

The Vikings return to the friendly confines of the Elmen Center this weekend to face the University of Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. and Minot State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
