They say records are meant to be broken. Junior, Jenelle Trautmann, isn't just breaking Augie school records she is shattering them. Much like the sunroof she busted out with a 300 foot bomb Friday afternoon.
After tying the Vikings single season home runs record of 18 in both her freshman and sophomore years, Jenelle Trautmann, entered her junior season needing only eight to break the career mark. On Friday, the Bowden Field Bomber, needed only one, but instead hit three to claim the record. Even her skipper didn't expect this to happen in this little time when she recruited the Hastings, MN native.
"I wouldn't say I expected 47 home runs in two-and-a-half years, but I expected her to hit well," Augustana Manager Gretta Melsted said. "I knew what she was capable of because I saw her hit a lot of home runs in the summer. I did not think that this would be the next kid that owns the Augustana home run record," Melsted added.
She entered today batting .319, with 11 homers, and 40 RBI. As dominant as the All-American is at the dish, she is equally as lethal in the circle. With just 22 more wins she will become the school’s all-time leader. For No. 10, protecting her start on the mound starts at the plate.
"It means a lot to me. If I'm not on that day at the plate and we have other people step up it's huge. If we can get two runners to score in the first inning, it makes me feel that much more comfortable knowing that we have runs on the board already," Vikings Junior P/1B JenelleTrautmann said."
"She has all the skills for the game and she does a good job in each one of those phases. With her hitting, she definitely protects herself, that's for sure," Melsted said.
Trautmann still has another month left of this season to try and not only break her single season home runs record, but also her senior year to continue rewriting the record books. The real question now is can she hit 32 more to reach the Divison II career mark of 79?
"I'm going to try," Trautmann replied. "I mean I have to shoot for something, but my goal is to get base hits. If something happens, it happens, but it will happen for the right reason."
Jenelle and her Vikings began their six game road stretch this afternoon. Augie took game one 6-7, but fell 1-0 in game two.
