CSB: Jags Sweep Jacks

IUPUI used a pair of big innings to complete a three game sweep over South Dakota State on Sunday in the series finale at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, downing the Jackrabbits 12-8.

The Jackrabbits fall to 7-21 overall with the loss and to 2-7 in The Summit League, while the Jaguars even their overall record at 15-15 and their league mark to 4-4.

The Jaguars pounded out 17 hits in the win, five of which came in the second inning, when they scored five runs to take a 5-1 lead.

The Jacks got those runs back in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Elyse Eitel’s second homerun of the season, a three-run shot that gave SDSU the lead back at 6-5.

IUPUI got those runs back, plus one more, in the third inning, scoring six runs on seven hits, and capitalizing on a pair of Jackrabbit miscues.

SDSU cut the deficit to 11-8 with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the rally ended with the bases loaded, and IUPUI tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to secure the win and the sweep.

Eitel led the Jacks with a 1 for 3 day at the plate, with a homerun, a walk and four RBI. Sammy Bingham went 2 for 4 at the dish with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

Jennifer Sutton took the loss in the circle, giving up six runs, four earned, with no walks and two strikeouts in one and a third innings pitched.

The Jackrabbits look to snap the skid on Tuesday, when they travel to Omaha to take on Creighton in a doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.

SDSU returns to Summit League play on Friday, when it hopes to play on its home field for the first time since April 29, 2012, against North Dakota State at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. The three game series starts with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at noon.
