CSB: Cougars Send Seniors Off With A Sweep

With three players playing the last home game of their career for USF on Saturday, the Cougars had an impressive showing on senior day sweeping Upper Iowa at Sherman Park by scores of 7-1 and 5-2.
The pair of victories gives USF a 28-11 record on the season with a 16-7 mark in league play while Upper Iowa falls to 15-25 overall with an 8-12 record in the NSIC.
A pair of senior aces paced the Cougars on the mound as Amanda Walters and Bailey Bouman both picked up victories in the final home doubleheader of the season.
USF 7, Upper Iowa 1
After trailing by one run in the heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cougars scored seven unanswered runs to take control of the first game of the doubleheader.
After a home run by Erica Kirgan in the fourth inning put the Peacocks up by one run, USF knotted things up in the bottom half of the inning when Bailey Bouman hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Shannon Daly.
The sixth inning brought an offensive outburst for the Cougars as they scored six runs to take a commanding lead in the game. With the bases loaded, Bailey Bouman hit a single through the right side that made room for Shannon Daly and Erin Scott to score. In the next at bat, a wild pitch by the Peacocks allowed Betsy Thomas to cross the plate and put USF up by three runs.
Later in the inning, Bouman crossed the plate when Shae Hoskins hit a double to centerfield. Hoskins finished the first game going 2-of-3 at the plate with one RBI. With two outs on the board and Hoskins at third base, Brooke Stetzler stole second and while the Peacocks attempted to throw Stetzler out, Hoskins made her way to home plate. The final run of the day came when Erin Scott hit a single through the right side that brought home Stetzler. Scott ended the game going 3-of-4 at the plate with one RBI.
In her final start at home, Amanda Walters (17-6) picked up the win, allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out eleven Peacock batters.
Jacqueline Flood (4-12) was charged with the loss for Upper Iowa as she gave up six hits and five earned runs in 5.1 innings on the mound.
USF scored their seven runs on eight hits while committing zero errors.
USF 5, Upper Iowa 2
Despite being outhit by the Peacocks 9-6 in the second game of the doubleheader, the Cougars made the most of their opportunities on base as they came away with a 5-2 victory.
Upper Iowa looked to take control of the second game early when a double to right field by Erica Kirgan brought in one run. However, Betsy Thomas tied things up at one run in the bottom half of the first when she hit a solo shot to right field.
The Peacocks regained the lead in the top of the second inning when a double by Adrienna Olson gave UIU a one run lead.
The Cougars tied things up again in the fifth inning when a ground out by Andrea Sheppard Kauwalu made room for Kellen Dewey to cross the plate.
Using another strong sixth inning in the second game, USF took control of the game by scoring three runs to put the Cougars up 5-2. The first run of the inning came when Betsy Thomas hit her second home run of the game and the ninth of the season to left center field. Thomas ended the day going 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBI and two home runs. In the next at bat, Bailey Bouman hit a single to left field and then was brought home when Amanda Walters hit a two-run shot to left field.
Bailey Bouman (10-4) claimed the victory as she gave up just one earned run and eight hits in six innings on the mound. Amanda Walters also made an appearance for the Cougars in the seventh inning, giving up one hit on her way to recording her second save of the season.
Brooke Redmond (11-11) was credited with the loss as she gave up six hits and four earned runs in six innings on the mound.
The Cougars scored their five runs on six hits with one error.
USF will wrap up the regular season with a six-game road trip that will start with a doubleheader at Minnesota State on Wednesday, April 23 with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
