CSB: Augustana Blasts Mary In NSIC Tourney

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana College softball, the No. 3 seed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament, belted five home runs and held seventh-seeded University of Mary to one hit in an 11-0 win on Friday afternoon at Sherman Park. The Vikings (42-11) advance to the semifinal round of the championship bracket with the win and will now play No. 1 seed Minnesota State at 4 p.m.

Caitlin Nichol hit two home runs for the Vikings for the second straight game. Nichol finished the day 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jenelle Trautmann, Lindsay Spanton and Maddie Merriam each got in on the home run derby for the Vikings all hitting one. Merriam hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the second inning and Spanton hit a two-run homer in the third.

Trautmann picked up her 26th win of the season in the circle for the Vikings holding U-Mary hitless through four innings. The 26 wins this season marks a new career-high for the junior for wins in a season.

Augustana picked up five runs in the bottom of the second inning getting three home runs. Trautmann led off the inning with a long home run to left field for her 15th of the season. Spanton and Carly Peterson both walked right after the home run to put two runners on with no outs. After two fly ball outs, Merriam stepped to the plate and blasted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left center to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead. Two pitches later, Nichol hit her first home run of the game to give Augustana a 5-0 lead.

Sarah Kennedy led off the third inning with a single and two batters later the Vikings led 7-0 after Spanton drilled a two-run shot to left center. Peterson then doubled to keep the inning going and she came around to score on an RBI single by Jordan Schaffer to make it 8-0. Erin Kempf then singled to right field and Schaffer came around to score after moving up to third on a wild pitch and the Vikings went in front 11-0 on Nichol's second home run of the game, a two-run shot to right center.

Augustana will play in the championship bracket semifinal game this afternoon taking on Minnesota State at 4 p.m. at Sherman Park.
