On Monday, crews will begin taking steps to demolish ten houses along Dakota Avenue, south of 28th Street. The area will be home to the new Susan B. Anthony Elementary School. Once the houses are torn down, the lot will serve as a staging area for the construction site.
Construction is expected to last 17 months and the school will open up in the fall of 2015.
In an email to parents, the Mark Twain Elementary School principal says:
Throughout construction, it will be our highest priority to ensure student safety. We are committed to keeping parents and guardians informed about construction progress and safety precautions that are implemented.
Once the school building is completed, the lot will be developed into a parking area for Susan B. Anthony staff and visitors.
The new school is combining students from Longfellow Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary. It will be located where Mark Twain Elementary stands now.
