The USD Coyotes entered their first NCAA Tournament as a huge underdog, but the Lady Yotes didn’t play like it, losing to a powerful Stanford Cardinal team 81-62.
South Dakota started off with a bang going up 8 to 5 early in the first half. It took a few minutes before the Stanford Cardinal settled down. The Yotes hung in there, but Stanford took control when USD began to turn the ball over. At the half, USD had turned the ball over ten times compared to Stanford’s two.
The Cardinal used their size advantage to overpower the Coyotes in the paint, outrebounding South Dakota.
Nicole Seekamp came ready to play and wasn’t intimidated leading all scorers at halftime with 14 points.
During the second half, Stanford started off hot and built a 20 point lead, paced by star Chiney Ogwumike. Second chance points were tough to come by for the undersized Coyotes. The Yotes went on a little run closing the distance a bit, forcing Stanford to take a timeout. The Cardinal regrouped and brought the lead back to 20 points. From there Stanford let their tough defense and fast break offense take over.
The Coyotes continued to hang tough in the game. Nicole Seekamp finished with 22 points.
USD left the court with their fans cheering them on.
