Counting Machines Upgraded In Minnehaha Co.

June 3, 2014, 10:17 PM by Perry Groten

Counting Machines Upgraded In Minnehaha Co.
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Vote-counting machines in Minnehaha County received a tune-up before the auditor's office fired them up Tuesday night.

Workers installed new rubberized belts inside the machines after April's city elections.

The new belts should reduce the number of paper jams that slow down the counting.

"The new ballots are grippier; they grab the ballots as they spin around and go through.  Those belts get worn out.  They get a little ink on them, from paper dust you gotta kind of blow them out," Minnehaha County Auditor Bob Litz said.

Absentee ballots that are required to be folded in their envelopes are often the culprits of paper jams.
