SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Volunteers will be out counting the number of homeless families and people in South Dakota Thursday morning. It's part of the state's Housing for the Homeless Consortium
The last count was held back in September where more than 630 homeless people were found just in Minnehaha County alone.
As far as numbers across the state, the most recent homelessness count says more than 1,700 individuals and families are homeless in South Dakota; that's up sharply from the winter of 2009 where nearly 1,200 were without a home.
The demographic is also changing. In the summer of 2009, the majority of the homeless where white; when counted again last year, more Native Americans were homeless. Also in 2009, the average age was between 46 and 55. Last year however, the population got younger with the majority between the ages of 26 and 36.
