Several dignitaries and Costco representatives spoke during Thursday's opening ceremony for the new Sioux Falls store. The much-anticipated ribbon cutting brought a round of applause.
That's the start of the activity. Customers were first allowed in the doors just before 8 a.m.
"Shoes, clothing, there are lots of fabulous items in this store so we're going to fill up this cart," customer Shelby Perez said.
Perez and Susie Minter were the very first customers to push a cart into the Sioux Falls Costco, but they're not from here. They traveled from Omaha for the grand opening.
"I'm in Costco about twice per week, so if anyone in Sioux Falls is like me, they'll be here frequently. We love it," Minter said.
Those who have had the Costco shopping experience are offering a little bit of advice to Sioux Falls shoppers, they say you always want to grab a cart.
"I'm familiar with the size and quantities that Costco has and you should never come into Costco without a cart," Perez said.
"We came last night and we saw a ton of stuff we wanted, so we weren't going to walk in without a shopping cart because we couldn't hold everything we're planning to purchase this morning," Minter said.
Costco's entrance into Sioux Falls is a $14-million investment the company. For the community that means about 175 new jobs. For these shoppers, it's a new option and experience.
“It's big. For small towns it's very exciting,” Perez said.
Memberships to shop at Costco range from $55 to $110 per year. Those are available at the new store which is on Grange Avenue just off 41st Street.
