Copper Theft Closer To Being Solved

December 7, 2012, 6:02 PM by Sammi Bjelland

Copper Theft Closer To Being Solved
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Sioux Falls police are close to cracking a recent construction site copper theft.

You may remember we told you about Waterbury Heating and Cooling losing nearly $4,000 of copper and other materials last week. After offering a reward, tips started coming in and police are closing in.

It's been just over a week since Waterbury Heating and Cooling offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Since offering the reward through social media and here on KELOLAND News, Waterbury has seen a lot of responses.

"A few people contacted us and we had a few credible people that came forward to give us some tips. Some of the tips we'd given to police," Waterbury CEO Tom Stritecky said.

Now, police are expanding the investigation. Although he can't say much about the ongoing investigation,  Stritecky can say there's more to this case than just his $4,000 worth of stolen materials.

"Fortunately they have connected the dots to a few of the crimes that are going on in town. Not necessarily ours, but everything seems to be working together. And they are aggressively working on it," Stritecky said.

Stritecky's case is still unresolved and the reward is still out there. But he says he's content with how things are moving forward.

"As long as it solves any of the crimes to help the community, and prevent it from happening to me or for someone else again, I'm okay with that," said Stritecky.

Stritecky says he is still taking tips, and the $1,000 reward is still available.

He also mentioned that local recycling businesses in town now require identification to sell raw materials. They hope this will make it easier for police to match stolen materials to the time frame in which they were sold.
