Construction Continues As Gettysburg School Starts

August 28, 2014, 6:00 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Construction Continues As Gettysburg School Starts
GETTYSBURG, SD -

For some districts, it's been a race against the calendar to finish school building projects before students return.

That was true in Gettysburg where students returned to class this week. Construction will continue around that school for months.

"The biggest object was to start school on time and we were able to reach that goal," superintendent Tim Hagedorn said.

That was a scramble. Crews finished a new middle and high school classroom wing just in time. Students helped get settled in this week.

"I'm helping with cleaning up the library and stuff," freshman Diego Lamendola said.

Construction crews will work on a new kitchen, wrestling room, gym and music rooms throughout the school year.

"My music room will be the sand pit that's right there," music teacher Jessica Larson said.

Larson can't wait for that to be finished. Music classes are moving throughout the school during construction. In fact, the band is even practicing in the senior citizen center for now.

"This isn't a school project. This is a community project and our community has been behind it," Hagedorn said.

Tax payers approved a bond issue to pay for the $7 million project and additional donors came forward to cover costs that came in higher than expected.

Administrators at the school expect the construction to be done this spring. Students will be able to utilize more of the new building throughout the school year as crews finish phases of it.

"I'm so excited for the new room and the new space and not having to move all the time," Larson said.

Gettysburg has about 125 students in the middle and high school and administrators say the district's enrollment is growing.
