Senator George McGovern is no longer responsive, but remains in hospice care.
The condition update was released by Avera McKennan Hospital on Wednesday. McGovern was moved to the Dougherty Hospice House earlier in the week for a combination of age-related medical conditions that have worsened over recent months.
The release says McGovern is surrounded by his family and close friends. The family would like to thank everyone for the care and compassion shown during this time. They are encouraging people to give donations in honor of McGovern to Feeding South Dakota.
The 90-year-old McGovern was a three-term U.S. Senator from the 1960s to the 1980s. He also served in the House of Representatives and was the Democratic Nominee for President in 1972.
