The latest proposal for an events center in the city is from Mayor Mike Huether, who's working to build support for a plan he unveiled last week. Supporters say it’s needed because the city is lacking a larger venue and therefore missing out on the economic opportunities one would bring.
To get an idea of what a Sioux Falls Events Center should look like, task force groups have toured Fargo, North Dakota; Sioux City, Iowa; and Omaha, Nebraska. So KELOLAND News decided to look at events there, and here in Sioux Falls through the end of November.
Let's start our tour with the Sioux Falls arena, which holds between 5,000 and 7,000 people.
Between now and November 30, the arena will host 14 events, ten of those are USHL games for the Stampede. The other events are basketball, one home game for the Skyforce, and one NBA preseason game for the Minnesota Timberwolves. There are two concert-type events including Curious George Live and a concert featuring Christian Music artists Toby Mac and Skillet.

Sioux City's 10,000 seat Tyson Events Center and Gateway Arena has a similar calendar to Sioux Falls with 15 events, nine being USHL hockey. There's one concert featuring 80s bands Starship and Survivor, plus four performances of Disney Live and a Volleyball Tournament that begins on November 30.
And the busiest events center in the region is to our north. The FARGODOME can hold up to 25,000 people for a concert, and two are scheduled through November. County music super stars George Strait, Reba McEntire and Lee Ann Womack are in Fargo later this month. Three comedians, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy perform in November. But the dome will also host two Mamma Mia performances plus one night of Disney Live. It also hosts seven college football games, 16 high school games, two days of youth football and multiple church services totaling 29 total events in the next seven weeks.
There are only a few events shared between those four facilities in the coming weeks. There is one Disney Live performance in Fargo before four performances in Sioux City.
Carrie Underwood has a concert in Omaha, and later plays the Sioux Falls Arena in December. And although the Qwest Center is more than double the seating capacity of the Arena for concerts, ticket prices are identical.
