Community Heroes Benefit From Program

October 28, 2012, 5:28 PM by Derek Olson

Community Heroes Benefit From Program
RAPID CITY, SD -

In every community there are those who work to keep us safe and healthy.  Now, the program Homes For Heroes is helping military vets, first responders, and medical professionals buy or sell a home for less.

"It's a way for us to say thank you to members of our community who put their lives on the line for us," realtor Suzanne White said.

The program has only been in effect for about two months in South Dakota.  But already, realtors in Rapid City have helped close to a dozen heroes find homes.

Heroes like nurse, and new-mom, Chrystal Meduna.

"I was surprised, because automatically when you think of heroes you think of people who are overseas serving our country," Meduna said.

"When Chrystal and her husband approached me to help them sell their house this program had just started," White said.

The young family was able to take advantage of a discount on the realtor's commission on the sale, as well as a reduction in the closing costs on their new home.

In all, the program ended up saving the family more than $2,000.

"The discount and this money could go to things in this house that will make it a home.  So we're really just grateful for that.  It's a great program and we're very appreciative of it," Meduna said.

"These people are just great people to have in our community.  They build a great foundation for us," White said.

It's a foundation that many hope will get even stronger as more heroes use the program to put down roots in the communities they serve.

"We're hoping to see this snowball and being able to really help a lot of people in our community," White said.
